Guidelines and Rules

The second Annual California Horticultural Society photography contest is on!  The winning photos will be posted on the Cal Hort web site home page and printed up in the newsletter. Each year's winners of become the judges for next year's contest.
 
Our intention is to allow the entrants to submit photographs until after the vacation season has ended.  September 30, 2008 will be the deadline.
 

JUDGING GUIDELINES
Judges will look for images emphasizing composition, design and color esthetic images, as opposed to those that merely document or convey information.
It is essential that the photo subject be in sharp focus. Unfocused images are discouraged except in unusual cases, for a desired effect.

GENERAL RULES
1. The contest is limited to members of the California Horticultural Society
2. No purchase is required.
3. Each person is limited to three entries per contest.
4. All entries become property of the California Horticultural Society and cannot be returned.
5. Only digital images will be accepted.
6. By submitting each entry, the entrant warrants that s/he is the creator of the image and grants to the California Horticultural Society the right to reproduce the image in the Bulletin and elsewhere, with attribution to the originator.
7. Entries will be judged by the Photo Contest Comittee members and/or past contest winners. Medalists will be announced and winning photos displayed on the website of the California Horticultural Society. Winners of this contest will then become judges for the following contest.
8. Judges cannot enter the contest they are judging.
9. All decisions by the judges are final.

DIGITAL RULES
1. High-resolution cameras (greater than 1.6 megapixels) are strongly recommended for capturing images submitted to the contest.
2. If camera resolution is selectable, highest setting should be used.
3. Photos captured with a flatbed scanner should be scanned with a resolution setting of either 300dpi or 600dpi. If an enlargement is available, please scan the enlarged print.
4. Software should not be used to change the resolution of any image submitted. Cropping and enhancements such as sharpness, color balance, contrast or brightness are permissible.
5. Images will only be accepted in jpeg (.jpg) file format.
6. No other compression (e.g., .zip compression) should be used to transmit the file.
7. Send photo(s) as an attachment to : Photo Contest Submission
In the email, please include the following: • Your full name. • Mailing address. • E-mail address. • Number of images that you have submitted to the contest. • Brief description of each submitted image (identification of the subject is sufficient) • When and where the photo was taken

8. Digital Images may be submitted by postal mail, on a CD. All CD entries must be received by September 30, 2008, include all the information from Rule #7 above, and should be mailed to:
