hippeastrum - Horse rider: two of the leaves stand up like horse’s ears
South American bulb from Peru and Bolivia blooming in the Fall in a light shade to sunny location. It has lustrous strap-like leaves characteristic of the family and a 30-inch flower stalk. The flowers are gratifyingly large, 6inches +, with a pleated funnel forming stars of a deep green with a deep red lip liner or racing stripe exclaiming to the pollinating and horticultural world "come and get it, here I AM!!"
