Carex barbarae
Family: Cypraceae
Common Name(s):
Grown by: Linda Baptiste, Martinez

This grasslike sedge is a California native and was much cultivated and used by indigenous peoples for basket weaving. In loose soils it sends out very long underground runners which are tough, yet pliable for weaving. As a garden plant, it does not run as much in clay soil with no summer water. It gets two to three feet tall and has pretty, drooping brown seed heads. It prefers full sun.
