Rhododendron superbum hybrid
Family: Ericaceae Common Name(s): Grown by: SF Botanical Garden, San Francisco This is one of the subtropical vireya rhododendrons from high elevation Malaysia. It is possibly a hybrid with R. Konori. Large, fragrant white flowers with pale pink markings are produced periodically anytime during the year, especially in Spring and Autumn. The new growth is covered with a coppery colored indumentum or powder. It needs rhododendron soils and shade and cannot tolerate below freezing or prolonged heat. Photo by Steve Morse |
