Epidendrum porphyreum Orchidaceae John and Barbara Hopper, Kenwood This unusual member of the reed-stem orchid group comes from mid-elevations on the eastern side of the Andes in Ecuador. It likes to be kept moist and is not quite as hardy as the more common epidendrums one usually finds in gardens, and so is best kept in a cool greenhouse in winter. Photo by Jill Salmon
