Columnea x Fugiama
Columnea x Fugiama Gesneriaceae Katherine Henwood, Pacifica
This was a spectacular hanging basket about two feet across and amply covered with outfacing, brilliant scarlet flowers shaped for the beak and tongue of a hummingbird. Each flower was about 2 inches long and the dark green foliage set them off beautifully. The genus is American and the plants are epiphytic in nature. They should be grown in a light mixture in 50% shade and protected from frost. Flowers last well so a blooming period of over a month can be expected in late summer or fall.
