Leucothoe fontanesiana Rainbow variant
Ericaceae Bob Hornback, Occidental This eastern United States native is sort of the American equivalent of Pieris. It has leathery leaves and clusters of urnshaped flowers. The evergreen leaves turn bronzy in autumn. The variety called Rainbow has multivariegated leaves. While the species wants to slowly grow to 6 feet tall, it can be kept dwarfed to 18 inches by cutting off the tallest stems. This form might be one that will remain dwarf. Leucothoes want acidrich woodsy soils and partial shade. They become drought tolerant after a few years... Photo by Steve Morse |
