Erythronium tuolumnense
Liliaceae
Alan Brubaker, Kenwood

Dogtooth violets or trout lilies are a genus of 20 species, all American except one. This species is native to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Central California. It has unspotted green leaves and deep yellow flowers on 6inch stems. They grow best in dappled shade in welldrained peaty soil. The only way to reasonably be assured of success is growing them in containers. They bloom in spring and are summer dormant when they require a dry resting period.
