This genus contains over 250 species of evergreen or deciduous perenniels and soft-stemmed shrubs from Asia and Madagascar. S. isophyllus, from NE India, has dark purple glossy foliage and light lavendar 1 inch flowers in spring.

This species can get to 3 feet tall and in summer the foliage can turn nearly black. It will grow outdoors in most of the warmer parts of the bay with regular water and part shade.
