This is the common rose mallow or swamp rose mallow of the eastern U.S. It is a robust, woody-based perennial herb reaching nearly 8 feet in height with one or many stems. There are numerous selections ranging in color from white, through pink to deep red. The flowers are large -- 8-10 inches across. The top growth dies back to the woody base in winter.
