Leucothoe fontanesiana (Switch ivy)
Ericaceae
Wayne Roderick, Orinda
This is a S.E., U.S. native which has several cultivars, either variegated or with bright red new growth. The arching branches may grow up to 6 feet in height, but are usually less. It is a woodland plant growing in soils similar to those for rhododendrons. Small, white, pitcher-shaped flowers are borne at the ends of the branches in terminal racemes. In cold climates the evergreen leaves turn red in winter.
