| Lepechinia fragrans Lamiaceae "Mexican Pitcher Sage" Grown by Kathy Echols, Diablo Valley College. If you hike in the Bay Area you have undoubtedly encountered our native "Pitcher Sage", (L. calycina). It is a chaparral plant subject to destruction by fire but quickly regrowing from seeds. The plant shown is quite similar with its 1.5" long broadly tubular blossoms of a rather murky purple. It is native to several of the Channel Islands as well as the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains. It is also found in Mexico in several locations. It becomes a shrubby perennial up to 4' x 4' and its large arrow shaped leaves are highly sculptural. |
